Jean-Paul Charbonnier studied Neuroscience and Cognition (track: Biophysics and Computational Neuroscience) at the University of Utrecht. His major research project was entitled "Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Acute Ischemic Stroke for Patient Outcome Prediction Based on Hemispheric Vessel Asymmetry Using 4D CT Angiography" and was performed at the Image Sciences Institute (ISI) in Utrecht. In December 2012, he started his PhD project at the Diagnostic Image Analysis Group in Nijmegen under the supervision of Bram van Ginniken, Eva van Rikxoort, and Francesco Ciompi. His main topic is automated segmentation and quantification of pulmonary structures, such as blood vessels (arteries and veins) and airways, with as primary focus chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
