Maschenka Balkenhol studied Medicine at VU University Amsterdam (BSc) and Maastricht University (MSc). She started her PhD project “Quantitative pathological analysis for improved prognostication of triple negative breast cancer” (Prim4BC) in January 2015 at the Department of Pathology of the Radboud University Medical Center. Prim4BC is funded by the Radboud Institute for Health Sciences (RIHS) as a Junior Researcher 2015 project. The project combines existing experience and technology in the areas of immunohistochemistry, advanced microscopy and digital image analysis to extract a rich set of accurate and reproducible quantitative features from digitized histopathological slides of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) tissue sections. These data will be used to construct statistical models for TNBC prognosis based on the most relevant quantitative features. She is supervised by Jeroen van der Laak, Iris Nagtegaal and Nico Karssemeijer.
